killed my pc

right!..

my pc was sounding a little louder then normal so decided to open her up and have a look

there was a little dust especially around what i think is called the heatsink fan (it sat under my gfx card) anyway...it was pretty much clogged up with dust so unclipped it and took it off to clean it, there is also a square plate with prob 100+pins stuck to the back of it...kinda glued onto the aluminium fin type things (lol...am not very pc savvy) that the fan itself is screwed onto...anyway that fell off (maybe overheated in some way)...

i can get the fan fixed back onto the board with the pins inserted and get the tower booted up (it makes all the usual noises on start up so assume the pc is booting) but my monitor wont come on...or no lights on the mouse and keyboard....any ideas?

Or, it could just be not seated correctly?

Or, the RAM could have taken a knock.

think i will strip it down and try to re-insert everything give it a clean etc.

other than that its give it to a pro to have a look...theyre robbing b*stards round here so hold out for now lol

It could be that you've killed the GFX card...... It will in most cases cause the boot sequence to halt.
Don't you live close to one of the OAP guys?? They can in most cases (Apart from Bee) help you with your problem

Yo dude, just to be clear... is the heatsink you're referring to attached to the gfx card or attached to the mainboard?
If it's the gfx cooler, it is usually a low profile cooler that will be in some sort of rectangular box that fits onto the gfx card itself. But then I doubt you would have managed to pull the GPU (grafix processing unit) off the card and if you have I would take it to a good local shop and see what they say.
If you removed the gfx cooler off the card, then it may be worth replacing the thermal paste that is between the two (see below).

If it's the Processor fan, it would be more block like and completely separate from the gfx card. These can come in range of shapes and sizes (well mostly cylindrical and cubes) and are not glued to the processor, but have a thermal paste to help with passing the heat from one to the other.
It's a good idea to replace the paste when you take the thermal block off a cpu (especially if you haven't had a good clean round your pc for say a year or two) but then if you're not into building or replacing PCs, I might advise you get hold of a friend who is or take it down a good local shop (good as in non cowboys... Go down to the shop and have a word with them first, if they are friendly and see interested then goodun... if they start talking money, then find somewhere else :P) as there is a fine line between too much and too little paste among other things.
The CPU should only fit back onto the mainboard (motherboard) one way, usually there will be a corner of the cpu with a pin missing, or some grooves on the side of the CPU. I doubt you would have broken it had you dropped it, and if your PC is making noises when you boot it, I would hazard a guess at things being fixable. But as i said before, get someone who's into their computers over to have a look, or take your PC to a shop. You might find some people who list them selves in local advertisements as PC fixers, these are hit and miss, but will usually give you better prices than high street thieves.

yeah its the fan that is attached to the board and seperate from my gfx card.....im tempted to buy a new 12v fan unit but cant help feeling its something else...thanx for the advice guys

its cool guys will do what i said then take it to a mate....wouldve done already but he not back from his hols til monday....so will have a play with it then take it to him when he gets back.

oh yeah i forgot....when the tower boots up there are the usual sounds at start up but on the top of my tower where the power button is there is a little orang led light that flashes usually...it flashes once then goes off...its making me think of the mobo bein buggered

This won't help you get your video feed back, but did you say you detached an actual heat sink (those metal fins you mentioned) at some point? These require thermal paste to function, even the slightest air gap between chip and heat sink will cause thermal problems. Unless you already applied fresh paste a few days ago, just peel the old stuff away (clean stubborn patches off with a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol) and replace with fresh paste.

right looks like its my motherboard so am gonna be away a little longer as i only work part time so cash is a problem...will be back online playing as soon as i can.

i know this aint good as i am on a trial so if possible would like to continue my trial once i am back online...sorry for messing you about guys cos i enjoyed the couple of sessions i took part in you lot are a good bunch ...(though the less said about my K/D ratio the better lol)
